life in a box

Today I read Sharon's post on getting organized for her King Diamond Quilt. She asked what we do for storage. Being the completely vain person that I am, I first assumed she was talking to me. Then I realized that she has quietly been stalking me and watched me carry this home from OfficeWorks yesterday in my big IKEA bag.

If you saw my desk a few weeks ago, you could see that I was getting out of control. Plastic bags for sorting scraps and precuts weren't working anymore, and my stash had outgrown it's alloted space. I took drastic action and bought this 5 drawer holder from Officeworks for $14.99. My only regret after getting it home was not buying two.

Each drawer has a colour or two assigned to it and I've put all of my scraps in. The drawers are about an inch and a half deep and the size of A4 paper. Perfect for laying out the smaller pieces that I can't bear to part with.

The brown drawer is lucky enough to get to share with the ricrac.

I'd like to go back and buy another to hold my assorted precut pieces - wings, squares and ball parts. I try to break my scraps into useful bits for later instead of keeping too much clutter [ha! that bit sounds like a lie but it's true!]

My disorganized thread box and bobbins live on top with a few IKEA containers of quilting pins and assorted things. And nearby on the floor live two more plastic containers that have lids and close up when I'm not using them which is pretty much never in this house. One has all of my material pieces between a fat 1/8 and a meter. The other is a hanging file system with my patterns, traces and drawings for future ideas.

It's not a perfect system and it does get out of control quite a bit. But creative genius can't really be put in a box can it?

  1. like the look of those office works draws, and yes you always need a bigger one or 2!!....like that u use plastic storage boxes as well...I need to invest in a small storage box for small scraps too.
