Supersize Castles Tutorial
I'm on the road again which is a fantastic start to 2014. When I'm home, I'm going to awe you with photos from a top vintage fabric and quilt block store. In the mean time, I've done something big.
Literally big. Very big.
I've made these Supersize Castle blocks and a tutorial to go with them. They are an upscaled variant on the traditional Castle Wall quilts which I've long admired including this vintage scrappy version with its questionable seams or this solid version which I spied on eBay shortly after starting my tutorial.
It's a bit of a challenging block with all the Y seams which is why I thought it was a good candidate for a tutorial. It's just the right sort of challenge for boosting your skills in the new year. That said, they go together rather quickly and easily with point-to-point sewing. You'll find the tutorial up at one of my favorite sewing resources, Sew, Mama, Sew.
It was hard leaving these blocks up on my wall to hit the road for a holiday because they are quite addictive. I was planning just one for a cushion, but it started growing. I keep going back and forth whether I want one giant quilt, or a few square and octagon shaped cushions. Either way, more fabric is needed.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial. If you find yourself stuck or need support, feel free to leave questions and I'll help guide you through.
happy crafting

I'd like to thank Warp and Weft for sponsoring my tutorial at Sew, Mama, Sew. I write tutorials because I like giving back to the crafting community when I can. We create in a collaborative era. We grow as makers and artists by sharing what we learn. I am grateful there are companies who are willing to pitch in with resources so we can continue to learn and share together.
Great tutorial Amy. The blocks are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow! Those blocks are gorgeous. They are definitely going on my To Do list
ReplyDeleteLove your work as always Amy! Nice to see you back. You've been missed.
ReplyDeleteLove them!
ReplyDeleteThank you for creating this tutorial and providing the templates. Given how beautiful this block is, I might just find the gumption to give Y-seams a try!
ReplyDeleteThis is completely a tangent, but isn't that a Henry doll I see lurking in the corner of the photo?! I have one, too, though mine is loved nearly literally to pieces. I love reading and seeing your work, but was never called to post until seeing Henry!
ReplyDeleteThese are great. Thanks for the tutorial. I seem to be on a giant block kick these days, making some of the biggest blocks ever, and your castle blocks are very appealing. Y seams are no biggie. :)
ReplyDeleteoooooh, aaaaah! How very, very pretty. I'm going to pin your pic so that I can remember I'd like to try these sometime. Have a great trip!
