New bee blocks continue to be made. This one is for the Bliss chapter of the charity group, do.Good.Stitches. It's based on a tutorial at During Quiet Time. It was liberating to free myself of scraps and end up with a gem like this.Amy Badskirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09472022325478046250noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007081887693989527.post-69937128071793369852018-04-15T01:13:00.001+10:002018-04-15T01:29:30.040+10:00 Child's Play Quilts - Blog Hop

A little over four years ago, I met Stacey Day in a quilt design forum called Quilt Design a Day. A small group of us created daily quilt sketches inspired by photos and color palettes. Not long into the group, Stacey sent a short message to group of us asking advice about a business logo. We fast became friends - five gals from different backgrounds living on different coasts in different countries. The group is still going strong and four years later we are celebrating the launch of Stacey's new book Child's Play Quilts.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on an early copy. When I did, I instantly found myself a blubbering mess...
I've never been included on an acknowledgement page before!

Once I pulled myself together, I took in Stacey's 20 applique and pieced designs. The project I decided to try first was Apple Blossom. It's a pieced quilt using five feature fabrics arranged as squares on point. The blocks are cleverly spaced and come together to make a dynamic quilt that looks complex, but is simple to make due to strip piecing and creative cutting. My version set against charcoal is at the head of this post and Stacey's is below in pink. This is one of those patterns that you could easily whip up. It'd be fun as a gift or charity quilt.

February's bee blocks got made quite quickly. I was lucky that both Rachael and Stacey chose fun blocks to make. For the Bliss circle of do.GoodStitches, we made scrappy blocks based on a Christa Watson pattern in American Patchwork and Quilting. It was great to dip into my scrap bin. I pulled out some of the last scraps of a few favorite fabrics for these blocks. I quite enjoyed making them and could see myself making more in a large scale for a cushion.

For the mojo bee, Stacey chose intersection blocks from Film in the Fridge. I'm looking forward to seeing both of these quilts put together.
When you haven't sewn in a couple of years, your skills start to slide. Points drift. Lines slip. Add a small dog nudging your pedal foot, and you're in for quality time with a seam ripper. These two blocks are for the Bliss circle of the do.GoodStitches charity bee. We were asked for green, blue or teal doublestar blocks using Blossom Heart's tutorial. I'm a light on fabric at the moment, so pairing monochromatics proved to be a challenge. I'm hoping among the other blocks though, these guys will feel at home.

Amy Badskirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09472022325478046250noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007081887693989527.post-24902265342955450482018-01-15T05:15:00.000+11:002018-01-15T05:15:04.304+11:00returning with squirrels

Sometimes the horse bolts and you aren't sure if you'll ever ride again. Then one day, you see that horse standing out in the pasture and you say "hey old friend. let's give this another go."

To reclaim my lost mojo, I joined two quilt bees this year. The first is called Stranger Bees - a Second Home for Wayward Sewists. For January, we made Swoon-style blocks using Cotton & Steel prints and basics. John sent along an Essex chambray for the background which was a joy to work with. I'm not sure this is my best pairing, but I'm trying not to beat myself up as I reclaim my creativity one stitch at a time. And I even laughed a little when I put all four corners in backwards in my first assembly. I can still seam rip with the best of them.

It'll be a slower ride this time, but hey old friend.... let's give this another go.Amy Badskirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09472022325478046250noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007081887693989527.post-37727224698851880132017-07-02T00:42:00.000+10:002017-07-02T00:42:13.010+10:00meet peter parker

A couple of weeks ago, this little guy sweetly stared his way into my heart. Meet Peter Parker, the newest member of my family.

Parker was adopted via NKLA (No Kill LA), an organization that partners with many local rescues with the aim of reducing the number of animals put down each year in greater Los Angeles simply because they have no home.

This sweet little guy was found at a local shelter where he was being held as evidence in trial. When the trial was over, he was released to the care of Henry's Hope Foundation. He owes his name, and I owe a debt of gratitude to the fosters who took him under their wing until he was ready for adoption.

I'd been planning to adopt a dog for quite some time, but I never expected to find a pooch as special as he is. Welcome to the family, kiddo! I am so lucky to have you.
Three months later, my boxes arrived in Los Angeles. My sewing machine presented a bit worse for wear. Her frame is now warped. She wobbles a lot. I sewed with her anyway. I added some backs to these cushions I started in Wellington.
I've have long been a fan of the Googie architectural style and the signs from that period that dot the skyline in Southern California. You can imagine my delight when across the street atomic ovals and rectangles called out about yardage, cottons and silks. In its heyday, I would have loved House of a Thousand Fabrics. Today we're left with deteriorating signs, remnants of shop long-closed.
North America was calling, so I packed up my house and took the biggest risk of my life. I've left New Zealand without a job, without a home base and without a solid plan. I put faith in myself that it will work out, shipped my boxes to North America and hopped on a plane in December.

I'm in the US now, with the aim to make a new home either here in the US or in Canada. In the mean time, I'm enjoying everything this beautiful country has to offer. I started on the rails.

Last month after arriving in San Francisco, I boarded the California Zephyr and headed east to see family. Many seemed perplexed that I wanted to ride the train so far. With views like this, who wouldn't?

Moving back to North America without a solid plan is one of the scariest things I've done. I just keep telling myself 'Be brave. You got this.'

Amy Badskirthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09472022325478046250noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007081887693989527.post-25943244611806203012016-11-17T18:31:00.003+11:002016-11-17T18:34:25.137+11:00The train through Kaikoura
Two weeks ago, I took a ferry ride from Wellington to Picton and then a train from Picton to Christchurch. As the photos waited on my memory card, I was mentally writing a blog post. That blog post was to tell you what an amazing journey it was and that you must come over and experience the open air train car.

This isn't that post.

Four nights ago, we were roused from our sleep by a prolonged shudder. I knew instantly what was happening and I knew it was big. I didn't register how big until later - an M7.8 scarred the south island of NZ and left a number of buildings in Wellington unoccupiable. Unfortunately two people lost their lives - that more didn't is quite amazing.

As I sit here typing, the earth continues to shake. In the first couple of days, the aftershocks were coming several times an hours - M5 and M6 shakes rattling the house. We had 140kph wind gusts the next night too. The tremors have subsided in strength and I'm trying to go about business as usual. To say I'm uneasy would be an understatement.

I wanted to tell you about the train though. I wanted you to come along as it rolled past golden bloomed trees that dotted the hillsides, as a majestic mountain rolled up on the right while the pacific ocean lapped at the left. The Kiwirail Coastal Pacific made for an amazing journey.
The train passes through a few small towns, stopping for a stretch at Kaikoura. There you can get out, have a stretch and wander over to the beach. I did just that in Kaikoura. Yes, the same Kaikoura that the magnitude 7.8 quake is named for.
I wanted to tell you to take the train, to come see New Zealand's beauty, to enjoy life on the rails. This isn't that post. The Kaikoura rail line is now decimated - her rails buckled and tossed, hillsides fallen on her path. She won't be rolling any time soon.

With its abandoned buildings and piles of bricks, Christchurch was confronting. It had been five years since the major quake that shook their buildings and liquified their soil. I'm not sure what I expected. It wasn't this. The city centre still mostly vacant. Lots where buildings stood reduced to rubble. Yellow tape howled about asbestos. Where are the people? Where are the cranes? Shouldn't this be rebuilt by now?

Like many folks, I've amassed a large stack of stray quilt blocks. Some were destined for unfinished quilts, others were just test blocks - trying out new templates and patterns. As I often do, I handed lots off to charity groups to use in their projects. This weekend, I whittled down the pile a little bit further and made some potholders.

Weekend sewing. I've been making an effort to deplete my sewing stash - threads, zippers, fabric that lingers. Along with potholders from left over quilt blocks and the start of a quilt, I knocked out these two cushions over the last two weekends. Mindless mega-thin line quilting was exactly the sort of relaxation that weekends call for. Netflix was my companion.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find myself drowning in scraps. I finish a project and have just a wee bit left over of a 'perfect' fabric and I feel like I need to save the special piece for just the right project.

Let's be honest for a moment...

I don't understand my own compulsion to cling to the last piece of fabric like it's gold. With my new job, I don't get a lot of time to sew. I may as well use it on those rare moments when I get the chance.

With that in mind, I went scrap busting today. It's the last of the orange kittens. It's the last of the navy sparkle. It has no particular purpose and was born out of the fact that I could get exactly 12 HSTs from each print.

Hello little pouch, you're just the right size to hold more scraps!

As a side note: I feel like I out to apologize for the quality of my photos these days. I live in the world's greyest city and my landlord painted the walls a dingy grey-white. I may treat myself to a new lens soon. One that lets in more light. I welcome any suggestions on that front. I'm using a Canon SLR with a standard twin lens kit and added a 25mm pancake as a treat to myself last year.
Penn had built the perfect boat for a crazy cat lady. Guinney had married a crazy husband, so her obsession with cats didn't matter. They hopped aboard and set sail for Idaho, not caring at all that it was landlocked. The SS Guinnebelle was on its way.
The sewing machine keeps running. I've been doing some very basic quilts with the idea of thinning my stash and donating to charity. The latest comes from my solid stash, and I used the Kona Crossing quilt from Jaceycraft. It's a free, easy-to-follow pattern. I chose brights, but I think it would look great in neutrals and basics too.
Last year, I had the privilege of contributing to the #lovewinsquilt along with 36 other members of the quilting community. My block is the third row on the left. You might remember it from the tutorial on Sew, Mama, Sew. This quilt is now in its final sprint on eBay to raise money for The Trevor Project. Perhaps you'd like to put in a bid or make a donation to this worthy cause?

As reminder, love has yet to win everywhere. While I am proud of what my home country of America has done in support of equality, the impetus for this quilt; I can only hope that my adopted country of Australia will join in and do the same.
On June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States determined that states may not deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples and must recognize their existing marriages. For the LGBTQ community, as well as advocates and allies, it was a huge cause for celebration. It was a victory that represented love and light, freedom and equality, change and progress.

On that historic morning, 37 members of the sewing community checked into Facebook to find their feeds full of beautiful rainbow posts. Within 48 hours they had organized to express their joy and sense of optimism in the way they know best--through quilting. The result is the #LoveWins Quilt, a collaborative artistic celebration of this momentous day.
While this quilt represents the love and optimism of a whole community of friends and colleagues, they would like to acknowledge the struggles many LGBTQ youth still face by donating the proceeds of this auction to The Trevor Project.

Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.
Every day, The Trevor Project saves young lives through its accredited, free and confidential phone, instant message and text messaging crisis intervention services. A leader and innovator in suicide prevention, The Trevor Project offers the largest safe social networking community for LGBTQ youth, best practice suicide prevention educational trainings, resources for youth and adults, and advocacy initiatives.

One of the milestones that passed while I was absent from blogging is that I had an article published in QuiltCon magazine. QuiltCon is the publication available to all of the attendees of the Modern Quilt Guild conference, as well as the general public via Interweave. Although I've written articles before and was a technical editor for Australian patchwork magazines, this felt like a big deal. I was suddenly playing in the big leagues.

My article featured tips for small space quilting - ideas about how to make the most of small spaces, hints and tips for storage and general ideas for quilts who need to survive in a 125 sq ft caravan. I really do miss caravan living, but I'm happy that I can always look back at the magazine and remember what it was like.

How committed am I to the ideas I've put into the article? I've bought the exact same storage solution now in three different cities... including one without an IKEA!

If you're a modern quilter, I'd encourage you to submit an article or pattern for consideration for next year's magazine. The editors were terrific to work with, the compensation was very acceptable and it's a great way to share your thoughts and ideas with a wider audience. 2017 QuiltCon magazine submissions are being accepted through September 20, 2017. Go on! What are you waiting for?!

Where'd Badskirt go? So many of you have sent me emails over the last six months checking in to see if I was ok and I am quite thankful for that. Blogging isn't just about sharing tutorials and stories. It's also about friendships and community. I truly appreciate the friendships I've made here.

So where have I been? That's a doozy. There's been a lot of upheaval in Badskirt-land. I'm now onto my fourth bed in ten and half months which hasn't left a lot of time for sewing or blogging. Late last year, my husband and I separated - a big life change, of course. That unfortunately meant moving out of my lovely caravan and selling it. I stayed in Adelaide working in film and helped finish visual effects for two pictures, X:Men Apocalypse and Gods of Egypt. In early May, I packed my boxes again and moved to New Zealand. I'm currently laying down stakes in Wellington, still working in the film industry. I'm getting settled in, and once I have furniture I should be able to get the sewing machine motor humming again. Enough about me though, I've had a lot of projects come out in that time and I should really catch you up!

Let's kick off with the most recent one. This week I'm the guest designer for the Project48 quilt-along. Project 48 brings together 26 designers making 9" finished blocks. Participants get four patterns a month, two traditional and two modern, based on a monthly theme. I was given modern stars to work with. I couldn't get Twinkle Twinkle out of my head and eventually landed on the Like A Diamond block shown at the head of this post. To further push the star theme, I used Cotton & Steel's Sprinkle basic combined with another Cotton & Steel print. I intentionally added seams to the background as many of the quilt-along participants are doing scrappy blocks and it gives participants leeway to personalize it. I'm pretty chuffed at how it came together.

As mentioned early, I've got a new bed. I think this block might look great super-sized on it. At the very least, the bed deserves a new quilt.

Sorry that I ducked off without an explanation and thank you for checking in on me. I won't be able to post regularly, but I'll do my best. I've got a gorgeous new city to show you. Wellington is pretty amazing.

happy crafting,
I want to start with Anna's pillow tops, as she went all out. She made her first pillow top using a Heather Bailey charm pack. She decided to match the bowties and centers for a more subdued, but dreamy approach. The scale of the prints she chose, along with their gentle nature, make for one amazing pillow top.

One pillow top wasn't enough for Anna though, she then set out and made a second version, this time fussy-cutting each of the bowties. She has called this one boutonniere because of the floral motif. I'm going to have to enlist her help next time for pattern naming as well as pattern testing.

She still needs to quilt the cushions, but I was super keen to share her work because I think it's a great example of what you can do with the pattern. If you'd like to see more of Anna's great work, you can find her on Instagram @amseckman. She's definitely one to follow.
Nearly six months ago, Kim Andersson invited me to design a project for her newest fabric line for Windham Fabrics. Good Hair Day is a 22 SKU collection with six hair-themed prints in a range of blues, corals, greys and yellows.

I'll admit when Kim told me she was making a hair-themed collection, I was a bit bewildered. I'm not much of a hair girl. I rock a very short pixie that rarely gets dolled up. When I saw her designs though, I quickly changed my mind and fell head over heals for Bobby Pins and the swooped swirls of Just a Trim.

Inspired by the designs packed with hair combs and hair dryers and the saturated-yet-sweet colors, my mind rushed to the big moment in life -- prom. To be clear, I didn't go to prom, but I've seen it romanticized enough on tv to make an immediate association. With that in mind, I designed a pillow set where elongated bowties pop against subtle background fabrics. The pillows made their debut at Quilt Market and I'll be launching the pattern next week when I announce our giveaway winner! (More on the giveaway below).

The two cushions I designed, Slow Dance and Midnight Kiss pair selected prints from the Good Hair Day collection. In one pillow I used a subtle white print as the background; in the other I paired the prints with a cross-dyed Artisan Cotton, also from Windham Fabrics.

During the time that I should have been rushing to finish the pattern for the blog hop, I found myself distracted by the remaining Good Hair Day fabric in the caravan. It had prime position among the sewing supplies and had landed next to Kim's debut collection, Tidal Lace, which I also had the joy of designing a project for, the Ahoy There pouch.

The blue, blush and coral tones of Good Hair Day played perfectly with Tidal Lace. The prints complimented each other with enough variance in tone and hue to make for a visually interesting mix. So instead of writing the pattern due today, I busied myself making a string quilt using neutral grey center strings which lets Kim's fabric shine.

So that leads us to today when my pattern isn't ready, but it is my stop on The Good Hair Day blog tour.
