In a fabric store, I stumbled across some double sided fabric and determined that I needed it. I was pretty sure a project would come calling where I thought to myself, what I really need is double-sided fabric where the print practically shows through to the other side in robots and red dots. So I bought a half yard.
Question 1: What projects do you use double-sided fabric for? If the answer is naught, I may be selling it.

Question 2: What is the name of the green fabric in the left of the picture? It's a green honeycomb print and the spots are roughly the size of a hole-punch dropping. Edit: this is definitely not Amy Butler's Full Moon polka dot. It's much a much smaller dot. But it's a very good guess. Everyone is cracking on to that idea! =(

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the upcoming Moda collections. Question 3: What future fabrics have tickled your fancy?
You know that day that I needed doublesided fabric? About a week later working on the same premise, I picked up some chalkboard fabric. You know the kind that's sort of like oilcloth, but you can doodle on it to your hearts content? I had plans of a tic-tac-toe board or interactive placemats, but I've lost my oomph on those. Question 4: What would you make with chalkboard fabric?
I have no prize for helping me out today, but don't forget there's an awesome Melei giveaway on this week.
Amy--
ReplyDeleteI haven't left you a comment before but enjoy your blog. I couldn't stand to see your 0 comments to all your fun questions! Here goes. . . :)
1) I think you should make a cute, easy receiving blanket from the double sided fabric.
2) Sorry, don't know, can't be just polka dot?
3) I really love all the real retro fabrics that come to me because of the project I am doing. Boxes from attics, etc. They tickle my fancy the most. However, I love green and blue.
4) I have never heard of this. Sounds like something my 3 kids would adore.
So, now you can go leave a comment for my Easter Freebie. I'll make sure you get a bag. www.greenbaglady.org

I can only help with Q4. I think it would be great for an apron pocket. You could write the menu on it so that nobody would have to ask the dreaded question "What's for tea, Mum?". Or maybe a tie for your husband so you could write everything he needed to do that day for you so he would have no excuses for forgetting.
ReplyDeleteOooh - cool fabrics!
ReplyDelete1. A bag, wallet or something else where you'd like a finished interior. Or a reversible apron.
2. Is it Amy Butler? I have a slate blue that looks very similar.
3. I haven't looked at the upcoming lines. :(
4. I think your ideas were great. A travel mat for drawing say at a restaurant would be nice to occupy the kids.
Have fun!
I would make a dress with a massive puffy skirt on it, and go all 3 year old and pull it up all the time (perhaps over my head, if drunk enough). I'd perhaps also yell "Yay!" while rustling it around my waist!
ReplyDeleteHi Amy,
ReplyDeleteIf the spots are a bit bigger than a whole punch, like maybe 1cm then it could be from Amy Butler's full moon collection. I have it in three different colours.
cheers
Jen
hmm..
ReplyDeleteI use double sided fabric every day, I actually make my own!
I would so buy it off you, its super cute and i simply LOVE robots!
Hi
ReplyDeleteA only have an answer for question 2:
I am pretty sure it is Amy Butler, full moon polka dot, I have the fabric in reverse colors
Isa
Have been reading along for a while and am enjoying your adventure. Must comment on the chalkboard material... How about a shopping bag that you can write your shopping list on? No more forgetting!
ReplyDeleteKeep posting!
i like the idea above for a shopping bag to write your list in! genius! I was going to say placemats, you could write on the menu, or guest names, or celebration messages. Or maybe a travelling board or card game holder that doubles as a score keeping device.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the chalk board placemats - gret for when you have kids over and want to keep them entertained at the table.
ReplyDeleteMaybe some tea cosies for old fashioned tea pots which you could write what kind of tea is inside the pot.
Or napkin rings which you can use as placecards for dinner parties.
I want some of my own to experiemnt with now.
The polka dot is a japanese print that's called honeycomb! Belsize square have it in the green as well as several other colourways http://www.belsizesquare.com.au/store/fabric/basics/green-honeycomb/prod_560.html
ReplyDeleteI'm ashamed to say that I think I have it in all colourways!
1. I have some double sided fabric as well, and I think it's useless stuff. I ended up using it for a sunnyboy, but even then you couldn't see the other side because I quilt my bags. I suppsoe you could use it for a simple bib if you just overlocked the edge ...
ReplyDelete2. Dunno. But it's cute!
3. Naughty girl, trying to tempt me with fabrics!!
I would make napkins with a little finished edge with the double sided material. and that's cute stuff!!
ReplyDeleteThe dots look like Amy Butler to me. http://cgi.ebay.com/Amy-Butler-LOTUS-FULL-MOON-Lime-Polka-Dot-Fabric-1-Yd_W0QQitemZ200331304019QQihZ010QQcategoryZ28162QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
I'm completely underwhelmed with Moda as well. Just all looks the same to me. I'm excited about Bubblegum Basics from Quilt Soup/Henry Glass.
I don't think I would make anything with chalkboard fabric. What if I made a skirt and then I scratched myself? That would drive me crazy! :D
I'm sorry - I can't help you with any of those questions, however, I do look forward to seeing more comments on the double sided fabric, because I just ordered some a few days ago that I had to have! Gorgeous fabric BTW. :)
ReplyDeleteTotally in love with the idea of chalkboard fabric. I think the shopping bag idea is kind of genius. I don't know what else I'd make.... but I sure would have fun thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteI think that the receiving blanket idea is good for the double sided material but I don't think you have enough for that. Maybe a craft or cooking apron for a child that you just cut and then use binding to finish? Then it would be reversible too. Or, you could make one of those cute wall hanging quilts with pockets for stuffed animals. You could make the pockets out of the robot material and bind the top. That way, when the pocket sagged open a bit under the weight of the stuffed animals, you'd see the dot too.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I can't be much help with most of your questions. However, I can see potential with the chalkboard fabric. I would make it into clothing, so that kids can draw all over each other! Much less messy that the usual scenario here, where they draw on each other anyway!!!
ReplyDeletedouble sided fabric!? omg. I want it. I would love to be able to make an apron one day without the guilt of "oh, but its not reversible!" everything i make seems to have another side to it, just in case someone is to see it, and it takes forever and i tend to lose interest towards the end. double side fabric sounds perfect. and its cute! i NEED.
