Quick Ideas - Snazzy Strapping.

I've had a thing for webbing lately. I've been buying it by the bucketloads. It's cheap, durable and pretty. While in Japan, I had an I could make that! moment while trolling their notions shelves. And now I'm sharing a quick easy way to dress up bag handles, dog collars, belts, bucket straps and keychains. It's a small detail like trim tags that take your projects from fine to fab.

Seriously simple idea...

You'll need webbing, trim, coordinating thread and a thick sewing machine needle. Begin by pinning your trim in the center of your wedding. The photos above use 18mm trim and 25mm webbing.

Next, put a really durable needle into your sewing machine. I used a 100/16 but check your manufacturer's recommendations. My Bernina is a workhorse. Tip: If you have a small old machine that can't handle the webbing, thin twill tape is another alternative.

Slightly lengthen your stitch as you do when straight-line quilting. Stitch along the edge of your trim affixing it to the webbing. I use my edgestitching foot (Bernina #10). If you don't have one, you can always set your needle slightly off center and use the centerline as your guide. Make sure the trim is flat when you tack down the opposite side.

When you are done sewing the webbing, don't forgot to change your needle. It's just plowed through quite a bit and is ready for a refresh.

Now your ready to finish off your baskets, totes, belts and more. Quick work with a big impact!

  3. My hot tip is to wash your trim first - I tried adding trim to something and it later shrunk in the wash - totally ruined the effect!

  4. You are brilliant! I've been looking for some new ways to create handles for purses other than store bought. I love this idea and am already thinking of adding grosgrain ribbon to the webbing too.
