the new new dot?

Every once in a while, I realize that I've been living under a rock. I pulled out some bolts at the store and noticed that Moda has gone all CosmoTextiles/Lecien with their selvedge dots. When did this change happen? Am I lost in the fabric dark ages? I love the quirky Japanese selvedges, but I'm not sure I feel the love for these yet. Do you?

These are Sugar Pop (clamshells) and Hoopla (tulips). What other Moda selvedge shapes have I missed? Are there any collectors out there, lining up to make sure they have one strip of each? Or maybe this exercise was a waste of time for Moda? What do you think? Will it cause you to buy fabric you otherwise wouldn't have? I'm curious...

  1. Well, I must be right next to you under that rock, because I sure hadn't noticed that either! I just checked some of my newer stash, and you're right! I like the clamshells, I think...

  2. It's an interesting development, but not entirely surprising one, given the rising popularity of incorporating selvages into designs, and the rapid expansion of modern quilting culture. I'd wager we'll soon be seeing more redesigns and updates.

    I think they're cute!

  3. Very true Cate, it also makes it easier to recognise the company and range of fabric (Im guessing each range has it's own shaped dots). I really like the lolly pop fabric! I didn't buy it last week but now I'm thinking about all the great stuff i could do with it!

  4. I think it is becoming more popular to "decorate" the selvedge,
I have seen spiders and acorns in the past. I bet the gals that do nifty things with selvedges are having a field day!! And - Yes I think people will buy them because they are "cute"!! I actually think I bought the acorns!! sorry I don't like spiders so I left them at the store!!

  5. I've never seen them before, but I think they are cute. It wouldn't make me buy fabric that I otherwise wouldn't, but I'm sure it would be appealing to those that make things from selvedges.

Selvedges would be the equivalent to swing tags and labels on clothes, I guess. It seems natural that fabric manufacturers might want to make their brand more recognisable. Wouldn't it be nice if they printed fabric content and care instructions on there as well?

  6. Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill fabrics has little bunnies on the selvedge of her new fabrics.

  7. I like making selvage projects from time to time, so these fun dots add to the charm. They would definitely not make me buy fabric I wouldn't otherwise buy, though.

  8. I think they look quite sweet but it wouldn't make me buy the fabric (like I need anything to 'make' me buy fabric!).
I wonder if people planning to make a selvedge quilt or bag a la' 'Jodie from RicRac' might place this at a premium though.
Lucky you being somewhere that you can gaze at selvedge all day!

  10. I won't buy the fabric 'specially for the cute dots, but I do like 'em (and I'm more apt to save them when they're cute)

Plume had little fleur d' lis, It's a hoot has little trees, Hideaway has little flowers, I think they've become quite standard.

  11. It would make me more willing to keep the selvage ... but generally I don't pay attention :)

  12. Fun conversation!

We (Umbrella Prints) decided to 'track' our past designs along our selvedges. We add a new motif each time we do a new design.

We thought that it would be a great opportunity to use every little surface area we could find.

Yes; hardly anyone has noticed (!) but when they do they love it.

  13. I believe I've also seen paisleys and birds on Moda selvedges in the last year or so. Very cute, but I wouldn't buy fabric just for the selvedge. Or, I should say, I have yet to do so!
