10 Lovely Tea Roses - Progress

I wasn't going to post progress shots of this project for reasons which were all together silly. Progress shots are the kiss-of-death for things I work on. I'm willing to risk it...

I don't do pretty. At least, I didn't think I did pretty until I looked at what remained in my stash after my massive fabric purge. And I generally don't do simple patchwork projects, so this sort of came out of left field. Pretty and simple all rolled into one.

The pattern is based on one in Kumiko Fujita's ABC Patchwork Lesson. I didn't use her measurements or proportions, but her work is very much the source and inspiration. I looked in Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns for some historical background. This type of quilt block and pattern has also been called Lattice, A Quilt of Variety, the X Quisite and Floating Star in the past though fabric placements varied a bit. My first and favourite block is the teal Cosmo Cricket print which reads 10 Lovely Tea Roses. I guess that's what I'll call mine.

I've paper foundation pieced all of these blocks so far. It was an easy draft in Word and in the long run, I think it will help me out with matching points. The hardest part has been fussy cutting some of the text centers. I don't want to fussy cut them all, just enough that you catch a few words here and there as you use it.

The Kumiko Fujita pattern calls for 288 blocks. That's a lot of blocks. This is 30. 288 blocks... that's big.

What I love about this is that something so amazingly simple looks wonderfully complex. Do you do pretty? What about easy?

  1. what a great block, the effect is stricking. I definitely do easy. Paper foundation piecing, does that mean sewn by hand? or can you machine it?

  3. I do pretty, easy, complicated, ugly......what ever happens to catch my eye at the moment, or a QAL I found in blogland. Is that a word printed fabric you are using in the center? Very interesting! How big are you blocks so I can get an image in my head of how big this layout is so far. Will love to see this one finished!

  6. As soon as I saw the first pic I thought this Amy style pretty- candy colours and a little edge running through, simple blocks but like you say the technique is in the cutting. I can't help but fussy cut text fabric, it begs for it.
