abcd...

Yesterday when my Bernina needle went through my fingernail and shattered it, the first thing that came to mind was Keep calm. Keep calm. Go tell people on Twitter. My next though was OMG OMG don't faint. Don't faint. Don't faint. Then I laid on the ground until the world stopped spinning.

Stupidity is my only excuse. Perhaps exhaustion. Yesterday was one of those days when you go through the McDonald's drive-thru, pay and then drive off without your food. It was the kind of day you leave you wallet in the shopping bag that your husband kindly recycled. It was the kind of day that you run out of staples and decide your sewing machine would be a good substitute.

It was then that the needle crunched through my finger. And not just once. It took a few good stabs at that fingernail before it shattered and died. Both the needle and fingernail had been defeated. I was making goodie bag gifts for the ABCD Bloggers meetup. I thought the gals might like some cheeky pincushion kits with the help of my gocco. With all of the sewing machine drama, I failed to take a photo of them though. Hopefully one of the other gals can help me out.

ABCD is a great little meetup of artists, bloggers, crafters and designers. Guys and gals get together every few months to share cocktail, ideas and inspiration. Goodie bags are optional. You bring one item for each participant and in return you get something from each of them. It can be something you make, something you sell or just something that you love and want to share.

I nearly fainted a second time yesterday when I peered into my goodie bag. Was it worth destroying a finger nail and developing a healthy fear of my Bernina? I think so, don't you?

  1. And now I am even more afraid of my Bernina. Must remember to keep my fingers well out of the way! I do hope your finger is ok. And what a beautiful goodie bag!

  4. My friend has a similar story - sewed right through her finger with her Bernina. What a machine! Lovely gift bag, too!

  6. I know only to well what it feels like to injury a digit in the name of craft.

Hope it isn't too painful and you are on the up and up soon.

    Great, great goodies!

  7. Wow - I've never been happier that my machine hates going through thick fabric, let alone fingers! Heal well.

    Great haul, though. :-)

  9. Yikes! My brother sewed his finger on an old treadle sewing machine when he was little (in, out, in again and the needle snapped off against the bone and the point stayed inside, hasty trip to emergency) but I never thought modern machines could manage anything similar! Good old Bernina... I don't think my old Brother could summon such a feat, even a fingernail, but I'll be more wary from now on!

That goodie bag is amazing and what a great idea!

  10. oh god, I'm queasy just reading this. I think I need to go lay on the ground until my world stops spinning too! I came so close to doing this the other day and I'm a little wary of my Bernina now too!

  12. I've sewn through my finger before, it's definitely no fun! I love the goody bag though, is there anyway you can link to the people things came from? I LOVE (what looks like) the watercolor stag painting.

  15. I managed to do that with my Pfaff a few years ago. My dog came bounding through the room and I looked up at the wrong time while trying to push a thick flannel quilt through the machine, and suddenly there was a hole with a thread right through the nail/bone of my right index finger. The really painful part...the bill when I got back from the ER. I should have listened to my dad and just let him pull out the thread. Live and learn! Hope it feels better soon...

  17. I thought my Mom was the only one who drove through the drive through-paid and left with out her food. She would make me go back and get it when I was a kid!

Sorry about the sewing machine attack- this too shall pass...
