on Christmas stockings.
An informal census of our house indicates that we need just two stockings, but I really enjoyed making these. It's something that I've wanted to do for years, but hadn't gotten the energy boost that I needed. Now that I'm started, I think we might need a whole wall full of stockings next year. I certainly need at least six, right? Craig has picked out fabric for his, so I've got at least one more to make. I hope he isn't expecting it filled it on Sunday though? Looking around the house, I'd have to make do stuffing it with Nespresso capsules and sewing lint.
Craig and I have been using my old socks, as they were called in our family. To be honest, I'm not the luckiest bird when it comes to stockings. The first one my mom bought me and ones subsequently made in primary school were eaten by mice. We lived in a small town surrounded by cornfields. When they tore down the old high school, some of the mice took residence in our house and nibbled away at a macaroni Christmas tree that I shellacked (apparently poorly) in grade school. When they were done with it, they moved on to the rest of Christmas. I guess there's a lesson in there somewhere for moms and kids in mice-y neighborhoods.
Mom replaced it with the softest, most beautiful, deep red velveteen stocking that I'd ever seen. In my young mind, it was quite a trade up. And the stockings were hung by the chimney with care, until a few years later when there was a dreaded smell. The stocking literally melted to pieces before my eyes. Let's hope these new ones have a better track record. It's not all doom and gloom from stockings past though, it would be remiss to not mention the strangest Christmas stocking ever. Have you seen my Christmas pants?
Wishing you and your family all the best for the holiday season! May you (and all your stockings) stay safe!

Quilted stockings! Luckily stockings have no real reason to be around naked flames in these parts. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteOops! I knew there was a reason ours were hung at the end of our beds where there wasn't a flame in sight! The new ones are looking fab though. Hope you have a great Christmas (and that you find at least something in one of them!)
ReplyDeleteLove your stockings, Amy! I agree that you need more of them, too. Maybe a new pair for each christmas? I just want to wish you a very merry christmas - and thank you for providing me with the most lovely stocking filling - even if it will probably arrive early next year...
ReplyDeleteGreat stockings!Everyone in our family loves the stocking ritual, no matter what age they are! ;-)
