Ringo Pie - Lynne's Design Classic

Neither visually, nor technically is this my best Ringo Pie block. That said, it's meaningful which makes it an all together different sort of patchwork beast.

Lynne requested "design classics" surrounded in white. She offered images and suggestions. She described how Fiat 500s were personal to her, so it would be her own block. I decided to choose the single most important item to me in my home. My papa's TNT 8 track player. I think it's a bit iconic in design, I hope others agree.

I truly love this 8-track player and have fond memories as a child flipping through papa's Johnny Cash tapes. I would choreograph routines. Papa passed away when I was very young. This was probably the first "sentimental" item that I owned. It's traveled across the globe with me a few times. My attachment to this object goes beyond what most would consider normal. I can't fathom letting this go. It's the kind of thing that I'd save in a fire (and keep close to the door to grab in such an occasion).

Though the design is straight forward, piecing it took forever. I was disappointed with everything I tried. I must have started this six times at least. Everything looked too literal. Maybe it was because I'm too close to it. I felt down by everything that I did. I ended up with a fairly raw and simplistic approach. Technically there's nothing that stands out about this block, but I hope Lynne understands what it lacks in technique is made up for in rawness and emotion. I hope it's okay and doesn't stand out as a sore thumb among the other gorgeous blocks made for Lynne. I am sorry it is so terribly late. I'm sure you were expecting the Mona Lisa... mea culpa.

How about you? Have you go something truly meaningful (and unusual) that you just can't seem to let go of?

  7. Your block is really sweet! I'm sure Lynne will love it. All of my most precious posessions are things that belonged to my Nana - including my wedding ring.

  8. I love that block, so cool! But oh my, I am terribly sentimental, and I have all sorts of little bits and pieces to help me remember things! Alas, I doubt I'd be able to grab much of it in a fire, so perhaps my teddy that I got the day I was born would be the ultimate thing I'd grab

  9. I do love it. I really really love it. And I get it and why you needed to make it and why you couldn't get it right because it had to feel right to you. This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for when I asked for design classics - quirky and personal. Love love love!
