Mini Tutorial - Trim Tags

The normally silent partner in my craft venture was not so silent yesterday and expressed his skepticism about the acres of trim that I purchased. He wondered who would buy "just 10 inches". I asked him to give me five minutes to win him over. I wouldn't have needed five minutes except I paused to take some photos along the way to make up this mini-tutorial for trim tags.

I promise it's really easy!

Select your design and cut your linen trim. Remember that your design will be folded in half then inserted into your project. In this case, my tab will have a mushroom on one side and a squirrel on the other. Allow approximately 3/8-1/2" on your linen tape beyond the design for seams. (this assumes your project as 1/4" seams)

Fold in half and make sure the sides are even.

Using a zigzag stitch, quickly sew over the edges to prevent fraying. I think a short stitch length and a medium-wide stitch works best. You don't have to be uber tidy here. It will be inside your project.

** Tip: If you are making for a baby or young child, also sew both sides together with a straight stitch prevent little fingers from getting caught!

Follow the directions for your project as given. When you get to the stage where you are sewing the edge with your tag, insert it between the outside fabrics of your project. This will be the step that generally starts with the phrase "with right sides facing". Sandwich your tag between the right sides. Align the tab with the fabric edges. If your project has a top and bottom, ensure your tab is oriented correctly.

Follow your projects directions and sew the 1/4" seam as directed. After you finish your seam, go back and reinforce the tab sewing between the 1/4" seam and the edge of the fabric. Sew back and forth over it a few times.

Turn project right side out as directed. Voila! We're done! It's a tiny tag but a great way to dress up any project. Perfect for bibs, pencil cases, pouches and more.

My picks for Trim Tags:

  9. For several years the BIG new thing in baby toys was "tag toys" and "Tag blankets". They were exactly that, a blanket or ball with tags (about an inch long) all around them. They are great for babies and toddlers as it stimulates their little fingers, and gives their brains little details to focus on. They were usually done in different patterns, or varying colors. Just an idea.
