Shhh... It's a Secret
I love that so many of you were excited by my diamonds and wanted my secret. Some of you mentioned you were going to rush out and get an Accuquilt. I'll let you in on my secret. You don't have to cut any diamond shapes at all. Not a single one!!!
I used a preprinted fusible interfacing from Quiltsmart. Before I get into how it works, I'll mention that I toyed with stocking this myself after buying it. It's really grand and I love it. I bought this product on my own gumption. No one asked me to try their product or offered it to me for a blog review. I like honesty in blogging and I can honestly say I like Quiltsmart lonestar panels. I like it so much that I've looked into selling it in the shop. I'm not selling it yet though, so in the meantime try Quiltsmart, Punch with Judy or Ozquilts to order some.
This is so easy that most anyone can do it! The basic construction technique is akin to making quilt binding. You put two fabrics at right angles, sew on a 45 degree angle and flip. You can see the directions or watch the video. I recommend watching at least some of the video to see how easy it is. And believe me, it really is that easy.
Quiltsmart comes either as kits or you can order the instructions and panels separately. The lonestar diamonds come in three sizes. I ordered all three. They make other quilt patterns as well.
The pros numerous, too many to list:
- easy, easy, easy
- perfect points with no fuss
- did I mention easy?
- reasonably cheap compared to the cost of messing up
- did you see my perfect points?
The cons few:
- not great for shear fabrics as seams are pressed in one direction
- likewise supershear fabrics might show the preprinted words through
- method creates lots of small scraps and wasted fabric
- grain of the fabric runs parallel with one side instead of the center
- a bit bulkier for the quilt top because of the interfacing
I don't yet know how it handles in the wash, but so far I am enamoured with the product. In fact, I'm so taken with it that I've ordered even more today. "Quiltsmart - Classic Quilts, Modern Methods" - A+
Shhhhhhhhh.... it's a secret.
so glad you let us in on the secret! i love the look, and am definately going to give this a try!!
ReplyDeleteAAAA-Ha!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Wow! I thought I'd be whipping up a lone star after many years of quilting practice ~ this is aces!
ReplyDeleteI'm off to watch the movie.
ReplyDeleteJust grabbing my popcorn.

I have ogled the Quiltsmart products for a long time, but never pulled the trigger because I'm nervous about how they will quilt up. Please let us know what the finished product is like once you've quilted and washed it. If it's not too stiff and crunchy, I'll be all over those things. I especially love the pumpkin seed pattern they have.
ReplyDeletehmmm...very interesting and thank you for letting us in on your dirty little secret;) LOL!
ReplyDeleteQuestion that wasn't answered by the instructions/video: After you have sewn and fused your fabric to the facing, do you then fold it and sew the columns together?
ReplyDeleteLooks brilliant but seems a little expensive for printed interfacing... The results are fantastic though!
Can you send me a reminder to use my Quiltsmart stuff? DAMN
ReplyDeleteOne idea for the extra fabric/ scraps is to save them in a plastic bag and use them later for stuffing. Thank you for such a great post about Quiltsmart products, keep up the good work! Feel free to pop over to our Facebook page anytime and post photos of your finished project(s).
