pinwheel, pinwheel, spinning around.

Sometimes I start things without much of a plan. I had some inspiration, but no vision. Spurred on by a $2 thrift shop purchase of Thangles, I started making HSTs and pinwheels. Why? I'm not sure... I keep coming back to that gorgeous, enormous quilt from the Hunters Hill Quilt Show.

(more photos with truer colour: quilting detail, triangles, not quite full view)

I had it in mind last months when I bought all sorts of sour yellow and text in Japan. I don't actually have a design in mind, but I know I'll need hundreds of pinwheels. My favourite so far is the Echino panther which wasn't fussy cut, but came out perfect.

The process has been made easier with the help of Thangles. They are pre-printed tearaway paper to help speed up triangle making. Best $2 investment I've made in a long time.

I'm loving where this is heading, but I cannot get that childhood song out of my head "Pinwheel, Pinwheel, spinning around. look at my pinwheel and see what I found." I could easily go mad before I'm finished.

Do you have a favourite pinwheel quilt? I'd love more inspiration.

  1. I have a book on the history of Dutch Quilting, and there are some superb examples of pinwheel quilts in there, all using the old chintzes.

I do love the look of the deep yellows in your quilt!
