Although I haven't been sewing much lately, I've managed to harness my creative mojo in a few different ways. Must of that inspiration has come from friends. When Bec took a sign painting course, I picked up brushes. When Anne started doing creativity exercises in the form of a Quilt Design A Day, I joined in on the fun.
Anne uses one of the two daily images from Design Seeds to steer her in terms of palette and shape. From there, she gives herself 15-30 minutes to turn out a quilt design. This exercise is much like quick session in life drawing. You push yourself, but don't over think things. You work in broad strokes. Details can come later. After seeing two of her other friends join her, I raised my hand and committed to doing at least three designs a week.
As our group has grown, we've moved to a full Facebook group where we collect our daily designs in albums. It's been interesting to see the different directions we head from the same photo. The group has brought together quilters and non-quilters alike. In addition to stretching us creatively, I've found that it has been very helpful in learning more about the tools we use and even a historical look or two at common craft patterns. We are all using different software, and there are some beginners among us. I use Inkscape which is a lightweight, freeware vector program similar to Adobe Illustrator.

I've been trying to keep my designs to under fifteen minutes, and I usually make them before I make coffee as a way to kickstart the day. Not all of them have been successful, but there are some which I like enough to explore more. For me, the hardest challenge has been finding my boldness among the milkier palettes.

I wanted to show you some of my quiltdesigns today, in case you want to pop over and join in on the creativity and conversation on Facebook. The captions under the photos link to the related Facebook albums where you can find the inspiration source and ideas from others.

happy crafting, amy badskirt.
Amy, I enjoyed seeing each of these and following the links to view the inspiration and other creations. Some very cool designs!
ReplyDeleteSo much fun seeing all your designs together instead of spread out over the week. :) I feel like you definitely have a style emerging, and I really love it. :D
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I feel like I want to make the circles quilt RIGHT NOW. I really love that one.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I've been loving Anne's designs and yours are very inspiring too! I really want to join you. Perhaps this will give me the motivation I need to clear all the crap off my computer so that it runs fast enough to actually execute a quilt design in 15 minutes!
