Don't worry they aren't in cages. The monkeys roam freely and I am in the cage for my own protection so that I can feed them. They come over, stick out a paw and ask for food. Sometimes, they demand it. If it weren't for my cage, they'd steal the whole lot of apples and peanuts. After feeding them, you are welcome to roam freely among them.
How gorgeous are these two? Sitting there, gently stroking each other. Love.
Arashiyama is an outer suburb of Kyoto (and honestly, the only bit of Kyoto that I actually liked... overcrowded temples full of loud foreigners just don't do it for me when I travel) The trip to the monkey park was completely worth the overcrowded public transport, the mad crush on the train and the sweltering bus ride. If you go, wear sensible outdoor shoes. The major trek to the top warrants a bottle of water and a determined mindset. Hiking boots would be good! Bring a camera as there is an astounding view of Kyoto from the top.
So cool...
