Kumiko's Subway Interpreted

I took a stab at interpreting Kumiko Fujita's Subway quilt. I haven't seen it up close or in photographs. I've only it in her presentation of quilts video on YouTube. If you haven't seen it yet, its a visually inspiring video. The link came to me via Kerry and Ayumi. I'm not sure if it's available in a book or if there is a pattern available for the quilt.

There may be a faster and simpler way to create the blocks. My guess is that she used four irregular log cabins to create a circle. So I've started giving that a try. I foundation pieced to paper using a template that I sketched with Word.

Piecing this quadrant (Look at me! I'm throwing around math terms!) was far more time consuming that I expected. I have even more respect for the quilt now.

If I were to keep going with this, I think I'd need to find more large scale text prints and buying additional more solids in matching shades. For now, I'm working from Day in the Country solids and Suzuko Koseki text prints.

Once again, tipping my hat to Kumiko Fujita. Her work is very inspiring.

  2. Wow that is so impressive! At first when you said subway quilt I was thinking you were referring to all those pleasant quilts replicating city subway lines lol. I was like, why does she have so many log cabins for that?? lol. Then I saw the video.

Beautiful quilt, although I think I might tackle the city subway quilt a little sooner.

    Thanks for sharing!
