the pointy end of the stick

Tuesday Tip by badskirt - amy
Tuesday Tip, a photo by badskirt - amy on Flickr.

A simple, almost lame, tip for Tuesday.

Reuse those empty needle cases for disposing of old needles. Its a much better solution than throwing them straight in the bin. Even if you wrap them up in fabric, there's still a chance that they make poke your kids, your dog or your garbage man. Heck, they might even poke you as you rifle through to find that one last little scrap that may be lurking in the bin.

A bit of masking tape or a small sticker is an easy way to mark which case has old needles and which ones are fresh. When the case of "olds" get full, you can use the same piece of masking tape to seal the end before disposal. Then, there's no chance of the needles hurting the guys at the local tip. They have a pretty crap job, let's not make it any worse for them.

Have you changed your needle lately? It's probably time...

  1. Good advice! I saved a plastic box that once held straight pins, and now it's the place for my old rotary cutter blades and sewing machine needles. I've heard of people using breath mint containers too.

  3. I also use an empty medicine pill container for my old needles. Just remember to pull off the labels before you do this. It'll hold a LOT of needles. Mine is never far from my sewing machine. ;-)

  4. A great tip for needle disposal. Needle changing is always a hassle - I REALLY want to see an odometer on my machine so I can see how may sewing miles I'm ticking up. Wouldn't that be useful for knowing when to change needles (and when to have it serviced??!)
