Since seeing them around the web, I've wanted to try my hand at the interlocking plus quilts that have been popping up in the last couple of years.
So with no purpose in mind, I walked to my newly tidied fabric stash. I tried to remember what fabrics set apart the interlocking plus quilts that I liked best. I decided I wanted to make something with a fairly neutral background with pops of colour. So I raided my pale grey section (depleted it actually) and then added some reds and coal for contrast.
This bugger is only 36"x36". I thought I was making a play mat size quilt sans border, but the mister spied it and asked if he could "trade in" the quilt I made him a few weeks ago for this one. So I'll add a border and size it up for him. I'm thinking it will be something in the charcoal family, but I'll have to check my stash.
I didn't follow a specific pattern, but if you are looking for one there is one in Rashida's Coleman-Hale's I Heart Patchwork book. I used 3 1/2" squares (3" finished) and roughly 10 prints for variety. I simply started in one corner and worked by rows making up my layout as I went.
With the right colour scheme, these quilts can have big impact and are a perfect starting point for the beginning patchworker. If you're new to quilting and aren't sure where to start, I'd give this layout a big thumbs-up.

Lol Craig! Did you tell him this isn't a used car yard and you get what you're given and you are grateful for it ????? :) Do seriously love the colour scheme tho. Would look great on my red couch, maybe I could fight Craig for it? :)
ReplyDeleteOOOhhhh! Love your fabric choices and the almost "random" look of the layout. Cute.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! When I saw the title I was like what did he do to deserve two quilts in one month!:)
ReplyDeleteLooks great....I was thinking of using a couple of charm packs to do this!:)
I am making a 'plus' quilt at the moment for my 8 year old daughter. I have s gone for the (rather ubiquitous) red/pink/aqua theme but it is just so suitable for a small girl that I couldn't resist. I do really love your more sedate colour palette.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is a perfect beginner quilt. The stitching is simple, but the layout of can be quite dramatic.
I love your color choices! I had a lot of fun doing a cross quilt pillow for a swap. It's definitely on my do again list.
ReplyDeleteLove plus quilts ... this one is great .

ReplyDeletewonderful color choies, especially the white on red text!! You always have the coolest fabrics. I am sure Craig will love it.
ReplyDeletei have a "plus" quilt on my to-do list, but i need my fabric to arrive so that i can start cutting. i was planning on 10 prints and that looks about right to me. plenty of variety!

I love the colors you chose! I recently tackled one of these too and I agree - pretty easy.
ReplyDeleteLove those pops of red. And I love that he wanted to "trade in!"
ReplyDeleteKaffe had this pattern in one of his books too (A long time ago, not sure which one.) - I was going to make one with my Hope Valley left overs... (That never happened.)
ReplyDeleteLove these colours, perfect "boy" quilt - would lend itself to a Jelly Roll too.
ReplyDeletethis is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove love the fabrics and colors.
ReplyDeleteLove your work!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a nice colour combination! I also admired those cross quilts recently but yours is definitely one of the best!
