Red, grey and wrinkly.

I was a bit surprised when this quilt came out the dryer. I hadn't expected it to look like a before shot for decolletage cream. Wrinkle city. Puffs galore.

I normally love the wrinkly, textural look; but I had it in my head that this quilt would be one of those flat ones. I thought a 4" wide grid would be loose enough to avoid the over-quilted, highly textured look. I used Warm & White which has given me a flat look with wide quilting in the past. But maybe it was the batting?  I mixed materials and brands. Assorted handscreened linens, Japanese linen blends, three brands of solids and another few patchwork brands. I didn't bother to prewash any of them. That definitely set me up for disaster. It wrinkled pretty evenly though, so I don't think it was the mix of fabrics either. I suspect there was shrinkage in my backing fabric, a non-quilting cotton. I also wonder if I inadvertently stretched the top when using basting spray. I'm pretty new to basting spray which effectively glue. Badskirt and glue is combination prone to failure. Whatever the reason, it's gosh darn wrinkly after just one run through the washer and dryer. And let's be honest. I'm not the kind of gal who is going to iron her quilts before she puts them to use in the house.

It's a small lap quilt for our guest chair. I'm going to go with the story that the wrinkles give more places to hide the love.

  1. It's absolutely gorgeous, Amy! I truly LOVE a wrinkled quilt...evokes so much snuggliness. The fabric combinations you have used, along with that fab stripy binding are just beautiful and your wrinkles - sorry, your quilt's wrinkles - just add. I'm sure it will be fought over x

  2. I love it Amy - it is just beautiful. I am partial to the flat, non wringled look and try to put off washing quilts to keep them non-wrinkled for longer.
