"Are you Amy?"
It wasn't exactly what I had hoped to hear as I was clutching a roll of realistic trout fabric while wading through the store clearance bin.
"I read your blog."
Oh dear lord. I hadn't brushed my hair this morning. I barely managed to put on clothes. I've been cooped up on the couch for three days fighting off a lymph infection. I'm pumped on antibiotics. I look like death walking and I've been spotted carrying around realistic trout fabric.
I somehow managed a polite hello knowing that if she got one good look at me in this state, I'd probably lose a blog reader.
Luckily for me, my awkward embarrassment was broken when a somewhat intoxicated fella stumbled in and started chatting me up. I'm not sure if it was my pale skin, bad hair or fish fabric that grabbed his attention.
Poor Cindy. I'm sure she wishes she'd just kept her head down and moved on to another section of the store. I'm sure after today, she's moved on to other blogs.
Me? I bought three meters of trout fabric. Three meters of realistic trout set against a tacky orange and green background.
I thought it might be a good challenge.
The fabric has great colours in it. Even it its a bit strange. So ugly that it's good, right? Or maybe that's just the infection talking?
I thought it might be fun to dig through my stash and see what I could come up with that worked well. Maybe lots of teeny HSTs or pinwheels in really happy shades. Maybe a whack&stack kaleidoscope quilt?
Do you ever buy ugly fabric with the hope of making it beautiful? Do you have any ideas on how I can make three meters of trout sing? What would you do with it?
I think that it is so ugly it's good and I would so wear a dress made of that :)
ReplyDeleteThe colors in it are so pretty.
I love this fabric. I bought it in a couple of different colourways and made a great shirt for one of my friends baby http://www.iwastoldtogetahobby.com/2011/06/just-trout.html I cant wait to see what you do with yours.
ReplyDeleteIt would make a perfect "apple" shirt for Noah. I'm not sure what I would do with the other two and a bit metres though...
ReplyDeletecushions!
ReplyDeleteit would also make a great bag
ReplyDeleteYes, cushions for a seaside holiday house (in the event that you should you acquire a seaside holiday house!)
ReplyDeleteMarina x
I love the colours in this fabric! Amy if anyone can find a way to do something cute with this fabric it's you!
ReplyDeleteI had a similar run in with ugly trout fabric, so I made pajama pants! They are a great weight to lounge in.
ReplyDeleteI want shorts made of that fabric. I actually think it's really cute!
ReplyDeleteSo funny! Although, cushions for a rustic cabin would be cool! Or shorts for grandpa, and a matching hat with some fish lures stuck in it..The options are endless really.. :)
ReplyDeleteUm...I had that fabric. I made it into a shopping bag for my fiancé (at his request).
ReplyDeleteWhack and stack of course! It was what I was thinking as I read the blog. It would be awesome, really, it would.
ReplyDeleteStill here Amy. Sorry to make you feel uncomfortable yesterday - you had nothing to worry about (other than Mr Distillery that I still can't believe was in the shop). I enjoy reading your blog. You make me laugh and offer plenty of inspiration. Can't wait to see what you do with the rainbow trout.
ReplyDeleteHa! I love the fabric, definitely have to go with something kitcheny, say fish shaped oven-mits.
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE this fabric!! I love a real ugly & love making them swans.
ReplyDeleteI am sure Cindy is like the rest of us, we have all had those bad days & we understand.
Trust me, I was not a good look yesterday & today is no picture either. I really need a haircut!!
What is it with random blokes trying to pick up women?? I had a drunk try to get my phone number as I was walking to the post office the other day. Less than 300 metres from my home which was a worry. And they are shocked when you say you are not interested?? What the???
I must get beyond stroking fabric this weekend if I can manage it :/
Good luck with yours.
Cheers

So, it definitely has great colors in it... I'm pretty sure you can make anything cool. Let's see it!
ReplyDeleteCan you believe I found your blog by googling "trout fabric"? I'm absolutely devastated to see it's from 2012 and it's unlikely I'll find 3 metres.
