Our local Australian Rules team won the premiership this weekend. For my non-Australian readers, that's the equivalent of winning the Superbowl. It's big news. When we moved to Hawthorn, Craig and I rapidly became Hawks fans, bought footy scarves and even went to a couple of games at the MCG. Moving to the Melbourne area rekindled a love of sport that I had lost somewhere along the way.
Our apartment overlooks a city train line and just beyond that is Glenferrie Oval, the spiritual home of the Hawthorn Hawks. They played there for many years until they outgrew the stadium and moved somewhere bigger. Glenferrie Oval is heart of the Hawks though, so the celebration party on Sunday was held in my backyard.

Before heading over to cheer the boys with the growing crowd, I wanted to make a victory pennant. I got caught up in sewing and time got away from me. I could hear them announcing the players, and I felt a pang of regret that I was still futzing with thread instead of cheering with the swelling crowd.
I was sitting at our table sewing yesterday when something sparkly caught my eye. Instinctively, I grabbed my camera.
I heard the explosion before I saw it.
My first reaction was to press the shutter. My second reaction was to duck. Wayward streamers on the signal lines were the culprit; celebratory plans that clearly went wrong.
I told Craig on Saturday that was I glad we lived in a city that didn't celebrate sporting victories by burning the place down. Obviously, I spoke too soon.
I'm a bit giddy that Twitter buzzed about the photo, then the AFL, the Herald Sun, The Age and Channel 9 news all picked it up for their coverage. My fifteen minutes of fame now down to thirteen.
I admire your commitment as recent arrivals in Melbourne!
ReplyDeleteThe pennant looks fantastic, and what a capture, even if it was a tad scary!
