Ice Cream Social - Halfway point and Catchup Day

Halfway Point, Catch up Day

We're just over the halfway mark with our ice cream dresses today and I scheduled in a bit of catchup time for the weekend. I know not everyone has a chance to sew at night, so I hope this extra bit helps you out.

A few of you have been sending me emails letting me know that you're tardy and apologizing. Rest assured, letters to the teacher aren't required and you can still go on a local field trip to the ice cream parlor after you've completed your dress.

Since we're at the halfway point, I'd love to get some feedback on the sewalong. This is my first time in a hosting role and I would love critical and constructive advice. All suggestions and input are welcome. I've got a thick spine. Please be honest. If you want to do so under anonymity, that's ok too! Not only will it help with future sewalongs; it will help when I write the remainder of the posts on gathers, yoke attachment and hems.

And because every post should have a little eye candy...

I whipped this dress up last night. I wish I had futzed more with fabric choices instead of going for the top of the stack. It's not quite badskirt, but lovely nonetheless. Size 12-18mos, Kokka Trefle Russian Dolls and American Jane Wee Play.

Don't forget that we'll be back on Tuesday the 27th with Yoke to Bodice, Gathers, the Yoke Lining and Edgestitching!

  2. No criticism from this camp. I'm enjoying it very much and happy to say I am up to date! Found my #10 foot and can now understand the depths of your love for such a thing.

I'm enjoying this so much that I am looking forward to making another one to try some of the different techniques you have shown/suggested/pointed out.

    Great job, Amy!

  3. I only have compliments for your hosting. The pictures and descriptions are great, and you're so attentive on the discussion boards. Thank you for making this a great sew-a-long.

  4. Just realized that I gushed on about your awesome taste in fabric choices for this one on flickr and here you're saying it's not your usual thing! And on your hosting I could only gush - the level of detail in your posts has been amazing and way more than I would have expected.

  5. GORGEOUS fabric selection. Love it!

As for the sew along, you've been AWESOME. I don't have a complaint in the world about the posts. VERY detailed, VERY informative and helpful. Just awesome.

The only thing I will say, and this isn't a criticism, it's just something that didn't work for ME, is that I have been finding it way too slow. I don't want to go ahead of the sew along, because I've gotten such awesome tips and help (for instance, I NEVER would have gotten my pockets smooth without your post), but waiting 2, 3, or 4 days between tasks is far too long for me. Now, this is my first sew-along, so I could be (and probably am) in the minority on this, but that's my take. Next time I might wait until it's over to start so that I can do something each day, or almost each day until it's completed.

Also, just FYI, I never would have attempted this dress without the fun and inspiration of the sew along. And I'm thrilled I did, and can't wait to make more. I love all that I am learning, and am so excited about how the dress is coming together.

    SO THANK YOU!

  6. I have no criticism! I am enjoying the pace- even though I normally make an O+S garment in a weekend or less. But- I am super busy (about to have a baby!) and trying to get other things done before the baby is born, so I am enjoying the slower pace- it means I can do both!

I am also LOVING that you include tutorials from other blogs (April 1930's and the French seams from O+S). I really like seeing how other people do things and that there are choices! I have been sewing clothes for my daughter from O+S patterns for a little over a year now, and I am completely self taught. I am really enojoying this opportunity to learn something new and to participate in a community of folks, sewing together. I love the flickr group with inspiration from others and I love how involved you have been in the flickr group. I also REALLY like how you have the post in the flickr group that links back to the your blog, so I can go there to easily find the post that I am looking for.

LOVING the sew along. Looking forward to more. :)

  7. I've been loving the sew-along. I wish there was an easy way to have everything in one place (as opposed to flipping back and forth between 2 blogs and flickr), but I can't really see how that would work without a major website redo, and I don't imagine it's worth it!

This has been a good experience for me. I appreciate that you're doing it and I hope to do another one some time.

  8. I am making the ice-cream dress and SO appreciative of your detailed instructions and pictures. I find your directions much easier to follow than the pattern instructions.

    Thank you!

  9. I am just seeing this post but I LOVE it! i only wish i didn't fear sewing clothing (so far only quilts, curtains, and household things). Thanks for all of your posts (read through quite a few today).
