The Nature Walk - first effort

I finished my first Oliver+S Nature Walk pullover last night. It's a size 5 and took me roughly two or three hours to make including cutting and tracing. I think it turned out grand. I decided to use a single print rather than contrasting prints for my first effort. I used the brown plaid print from Riley Blake's Wheels.

I wish I had a little boy, so I could show it over a tshirt. It's definitely a good one to take along on a brisk day to the rugby.

I probably should have spent a little long on the cutting & tracing aspect because I accidentally cut the top front panel 1/2" short. The neck V shouldn't reach all the way to the top pocket. There should be a small 1/2" gap. Alas, I am human and make mistakes. I think it still looks terrific. The only other modification I've made is to use a single fabric piece for the sleeves since I wasn't keen to try to align any more stripes.

The Nature Walk has those fun large pockets that connect all the way across so your right hand and left hand can clasp. My 8" sewing scissors should give you a sense of scale. I like rounded design so a feature fabric can peek out. Can I call plain white fabric a feature fabric? I should have put in some honeycomb.

Like all Oliver+S patterns, there are tidy finishes and details like the faced neck. I like this pattern. It's easy and fun to work. The only fiddly bit is getting the neck facing to lay flat at the end of the V. If you take your time it's easy to accomplish. I've made this one up in brown, but the pattern is unisex and would look wonderful is softer prints and solids too. I could easily see it as a light windbreaker.

I haven't seen many (any?) other Nature Walk pullovers made up yet. If you've made one, leave us a link. We'd love to see it. Now, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the schooldress photo pattern to arrive!

  1. Lovely Amy! The colour is great - and I love the pocket too.
Stop making it sound so appealing for girls - I don't need this pattern as well!

  2. What a cute pullover! I had to laugh..if you did have a 5 year old boy, you probably wouldn't have lined the pocket with white! I wish O&S was around when my kids were little...and I'm still a good 15 years from grandma territory (I hope!). Must find some cute kids to sew for.

  3. Amy it looks great. I think it would be great in a lightweight cotton to throw over swimmers in summer especially for my fair little Lucy.
