DQS10 Progress - Mariner's Compass

My creative mojo is slowly coming back. Yesterday, I decided to start on my Doll Quilt Swap10 quilt. I'm a bit late in the game, but not overdue. I've been struggling to decide what pattern to use for this swap. I really love using swaps and small projects as a way to experiement with new-to-me patterns.

This time I opted for a traditional design, a Mariner's Compass. I found a great pattern in Kaffe Fassett's V&A Quilts book. I used the centerpiece from his refreshed design based on a quilt from the Victoria&Albert musem.

Of course, I needed to put my own spin on it with a combination of Japanese fabrics combined with Day in the Country solids. I also rotated the compass. This was my first time making a mariner's compass and I found it surprisingly easier than expected. This was foundation pieced onto paper. If I were doing a full quilt of these, I would probably foundation piece onto fabric instead. This photo unironed. The points are indeed pointy, not warpy. I'm really over the moon with this pattern.

I haven't worked out my quilting plans yet. It's not my forte. I might take it into the shop tomorrow to pick Sarah's brain or if I'm lucky, one of you may stop by with some hints!

For those looking, we stock the book and some of the prints are available at Calico&Ivy.

  1. Hey Amy - I like the yellow and pink, I also like the solid to patterned ratio, it almost looks like a real compass. :)

  3. Agreed Amy, perfect fabric choices! The button bkgd is inspired and the fabrics in the compass really show the points beautifully. Your DQS partner is in for a treat!

  4. Amy,
Just curious because I just started foundation piecing (LOVE IT)...why would you use fabric instead of paper? Just curious :)!!!

  5. Heidi: Mostly because it's difficult to remove all of the paper from the fine points of the compass. It's a bit fiddly with the tweezers. If you piece onto fabric, then you don't have to remove any paper.
