Excursion Mornington : Treehouse Textiles

A few months ago, I joined the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild which has an amazingly clever mix of members. The guild itself provides plenty of chance for social interaction with two meetups a month, but sometimes a few members will get together spontaneously for non-official outings.

When Bronwynn put up a note that Treehouse Textiles was having a small holiday party in their shop, I quickly raised my hand. Although Craig and I regularly travel down the Mornington Peninsula for kiteboarding, somehow I'd missed visiting this gem. After hearing about the shop from friends, it was already on my 'I need to get there soon' list.

Sometimes you walk into a fabric store and it just feels right. You can tell the bolts have all been thoughtfully chosen, creating a harmony throughout the store. Although there's a mix of designers and collections, the palettes work together. There's big prints and small prints, botanics and geometrics, muted tones and bold ones. That's the immediate comfortable feeling I had as I walked in the shop last night.

In some ways it felt like visiting an old friend. The haby and pattern displays were perfectly poised calling you over to take a closer look. The fabric range included new releases and old favorites - Yuwas, Cotton and Steel, Linens and Liberties. The attention to detail in the shop was there at every turn. Sarah and Emma have made thoughtful choices about their range adding basics, weaves and even knits to complement the patterns they stock.

Treehouse Textiles is in the heart of Mornington at 2B Empire Street, about an hour south of central Melbourne. I've recommended Mornington in the past as a place to visit when touring around the greater Melbourne region and this patchwork shop gives you one more terrific reason to go.

I was too transfixed by the fabric to look at the workshop schedule which I'm kicking myself for now. This would be a lovely place to drive down and spend a day learning a new technique or trying something all together different. For larger workshops and private bookings, they also have a second venue in Merricks North.

For dinner, the girls and I popped into Doc, just down the road, for proper Italian pizza. Sarah tipped us off as we were heading out the store. It was absolutely divine and I'm happy to pass the tip onto you.

I love the little excursions that I go on with my crafty friends. I guarantee I'll be back in Mornington soon to see Sarah and Emma. If you haven't stopped by their shop yet; pop on your motoring gloves, put the top down and hit the road for a visit. Trust me, it will be time well spent.

  2. To complete the experience, the Merricks site is beautiful and definitely worth the drive. Aussie bush setting is gorgeous.
