I brought home some Cotton and Steel Viewmaster fabric from GJ's yesterday, and Craig became unusually nostalgic. He gleefully rattled on about loading the reels and clicking the lever. While he was chattering away, I reached into a teal canister in the kitchen and pulled out a hidden gem.
I had one very happy husband on my hands.

We don't have many reels, but we're content to look at Hawaii and the White House over and over again. The travel series and NASA ones were my favorites when I was young. Do you remember which ones you liked best?
We had a muppets one. Close ups of Miss Piggy were my fave.
ReplyDeleteI have Thunderbirds, The Beverly Hillbillies and Batman, Niagara falls, Oberamagau Passion Play and The Coronation of our Queen! Plus a load more i cant remember. I have three bakelite viewers, all older than yours, they belonged to my Grandmother and an old Aunt. Most of the reels came with the viewers but I was given the Thunderbirds etc ones as gifts.........many moons ago!
ReplyDeleteMy childhood viewer was much older. It was red. I don't remember it being bakelite though, but it would have been from the 60s or very early 70s. Your collection sounds excellent. I received this viewer and all my reels as a gift from a friend. I also have Alice in Wonderland, Batman and some disney reels. =)
DeleteThese are really old, black and dark brown mottled ones - from the 50's. I do remember seeing red ones in the stores ( I'm a lot older than you!). Does your Batman feature Catwoman and the Joker and have POW and BIFF and SPLAT to imply punches etc? Such fun, I'll have to spend a nostalgic afternoon and revisit my childhood. x
DeleteMine was red too, and I remember cartoons - particularly Huckleberry Hound. ;-) I sure wish I still had mine.
ReplyDeleteI loved my view master as a child. I think that's why I love the fabric so much.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid a had the Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gratel. I used to look at them over and over and over again...Wish I still had them...
ReplyDeleteMine was brown and I had Bambi, the Canadian Mounties and one on Switzerland. I
ReplyDeletethink it's still in the cupboard. Definitely an antique.
What do you have planned for the fabric? Cover a cushion in Craig's home office? A device cover? An apron?
ReplyDeletePJs?
I have Opryland USA. Formerly a theme park in Nashville, now a shopping mall. 😔 Also known as The Place I Met My Husband twenty years ago.
ReplyDeletethose boxes were a sad face, bc Opryland is also where I grew up going as a child, and for obvious reasons my husband and I wish we could take our children. But it's nice to look at the reels and postcards.
