"Enough," he's said. "What are you going to do with all of these?"
"Hang them on the wall."
"We are not sixty."
In those four little words, the truth became clear. We are not sixty. All of this time, I've fooled myself into believing that somehow he actually liked what I crochet. Sure he vehemently protested crocheted throw cushions multiple times, but it hadn't occurred to me what he was really thinking. I'd heard him say, "I like what you crochet" many times.
I replayed the conversations in my head. I listened closely and then it dawned on me. One little letter can makes all of the difference. What he was really saying was that he liked that I crochet, not what I crochet. A subtle, yet substantial, difference.
It keeps me busy at night. It gives him free time to wind down and relax. If we ended up with a half dozen potholders in a drawer, he was okay with that. If we ended up with two dozen potholders on the wall, he wasn't exactly going to be pleased. Their destiny unknown, I'm still hooking away...
This one is inspired by Penny. The pattern is free on her site, as well as on Ravelry. A gentler palette would have worked better for this one.
My husband supports my needlework for the same reason...Just make them to please yourself. If it makes you happy, he will be happy. Don't read too much into it. (Advise from an old married gal..)
ReplyDeleteMy husband thinks as soon as someone gets married they start doing some sort of craft.. he likes some of what I make, but not keen on piles of quilts, piles of fabric, stress sometimes with deadlines, threads everywhere. Sometimes I don't like his ipod either..
ReplyDeleteMy husband pouts like a little boy sometimes when I'm working around the clock to meet deadlines. And he usually just doesn't "get" what I'm sewing. Chalk it up to the differences between the male & female brain. By the way, I love your crochet work & all of the things you make! You go girl!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful, beautiful pot holder..off to print it out NOW!
ReplyDeleteGosh at least your fella likes "that" you crochet! Mine looks at me weirdly when I do ANYTHING crafty! I think he's afraid I've morphed into his mum or something! I keep explaining, "this is COOL craft so it's ok!"
ReplyDeleteAnd I really do like the colours you've used.
this post made me laugh, then made me think! I am in my mid to late 40s and my hubby (we have been together for 30 years) who used to grumble when the place had craft stuff now just lets me be!
ReplyDeleteOh. I'm gutted on your behalf. Why don't you just keep them in the draw and hang them up when your fella embraces his inner Nanna.
ReplyDeleteI have 1 that my great-grandmother made. I am going to applique it onto the back of a quilt that I "will" make using her palette!
ReplyDelete(I have also seen a simple quilt where crocheted potholders/doilies were used as appliques on the front - that was essentially "the" quilt.)
Well, you know, I kinda agree with him. :p There's a reason I haven't really progressed any further with my knitting and crocheting efforts, even though I would love the process...I don't actually want any of the stuff in the house (I don't even wear knit sweaters much) when I am done. So totally nana-ish. :p
ReplyDeletelol, I think if you were to crochet a cozy for his toothbrush and coffee cup, he'd get over his fear of crochet real quick Amy!
