I can't thank you enough to everyone who answered by my tuffet question. You see, I thought I was losing my mind. I had a clear picture of a tuffet in my head. There was Miss Muffet (dressed exactly like Strawberry Shortcake for some reason) sitting on a mushroom with a bowl in her hands. To her side was a dangling spider on a string. I could see my tuffet plain as day. Why she's on a mushroom and why she's dressed like strawberry shortcake? I don't know.
And then I decided to search a little on google. To my surprise a tuffet seemed to have little or nothing to do with toadstools. Nothing at all in fact. I take only the slightest joy in knowing that I wasn't alone in the imagery. Courtney, Jess, Curly and more were all beside with me images of a toadstools. I suspect we all had the same nursery rhyme book. I suspect one illustration has led us astray.
tuf·fet n.
1. A clump or tuft of grass.
2. A low seat, such as a stool.
Who knew?! Well some of you did. It's left me a bit paranoid about what else I've misunderstood for 36 years. I've lost my footing. I've come a bit unstuck.
a toadstool is a form of a stool, right??? :)
ReplyDeleteMichelle, it sure is! and it's probably found in a clump of grass!
ReplyDeletewe're all good here, I think. ;)
I swear I'm going to find that illustration, though! haha
toadstool, stool ... what's in a name.
ReplyDeletei think i saw the same illustration as you because it was the first thought i had.
but i knew it couldn't be right and figured it must be some sort of stool.
sounds like the makings of an urban legend ...
Oh no! You mean I've been lied to for all these years. Next you'll be telling me that the Tooth Fairy isn't real!
ReplyDeleteThe stool is what I remember...but I am old. Ha! Great potholders. ~Kelly
