Tokyo Printing Museum
One of the things I did this trip was journey to the Tokyo Printing Museum for a mini-workshop on printing presses. Though the museum is pretty much in the middle of nowhere Tokyo in Bunkyo-ku, it's well worth the journey for any type afficiado. The exhibits are well marked in English and take you through the history of type from cave drawings to modern holography.
It's a smaller museum which takes roughly an hour to visit, but worth it for 300yen. Check their schedule for mini-workshops which last roughly 20 minutes and allow you to do your own printing. There was a guide who sort of spoke English and helped me out. She then took me to the private back area to show me the entire font collection for press... I saw Futura, Garamond and more in wood block letters.
Photos aren't allowed in the main exhibition area, but here are some shots from the workshop complete with my daggy tourist hairstyle.
Headed to Tokyo soon? Looking for something different? Head here.
next time you go can I pretty please come with you? I promise I won't be any trouble :)
