It was pretty early on Saturday morning. Craig was standing at the Nespresso machine sporting his hot pink and teal quilted toga. He turned to me and said, "could you make me a quilted robe?"
I was a bit blindsided. He was asking me to make him something handmade. He actually encouraging me to craft something! A quilted robe seemed a bit odd to me, but not completely out of reach. Eventually I managed, "uhhhhhhh..... yeah." I was pretty sure that I'd find a pattern among the vintage treasures at the Fabric Cave op shop. They made those in the seventies, didn't they?
At that point, there was no stopping him. He started onto a long list of requirements. "I'd like it red and black and it should have dragons on it. You don't have to quilt all the dragon details, but it should be nice." I was baffled and impressed at the same time. Where on earth did he get the idea that I could quilt a dragon?
Then I remembered telling him about the best of show at this week's quilt show. My god! He was actually listening?! He's chocked up a lot of points in the win column for paying attention to me as I talked to him about a quilt show.
It didn't take long to know that I wouldn't be making a quilted dragon robe though. So I suggested maybe I could just crochet him a beanie instead. A warm head is all he needs right? Lucky for me, he's easily pacified. I started on a red and grey striped Malabrigo number for him...
...I'd forgotten that he has a head the size of a watermelon. I'll be at this for ages. It's needs at least one more grey stripe. Maybe two?
I should have signed up for the quilted robe.
I'm so disappointed. I was really hoping for the quilted robe. You know, I have a couple of ideas as to how to make such a project a bit easier, though I would be worried it might be a bit stiff?
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet. I would totally make my BF a quilted robe! Sometimes (not always) when close friends or family ask me for stuff, it really gets me motivated. It sounds like a challenge! And if you don't over-quilt it, it should be very warm and comfy :-) Are you sure you won't make him one?
ReplyDeleteMy friend (or I should say my husband's friend) has been asking for a dragon quilt. Except he AND his labrador should be riding the dragon. I've tried to explain that that really doesn't sound like my style, but he is adament.
ReplyDeleteWhen you get the dragon quilting sorted, can you please put out a pattern? Or better yet, just whip up a quilt at the same time?
ROFL, can't believe you passed up the chance to quilt that dragon ;o)
ReplyDeleteLol! Sounds like a great idea! I would totally attempt something like that... I'd just find a pattern for a terrycloth robe, buy twice the yardage, sandwich with batt and quilt it lightly, then cut the pieces out of that. Maybe get a little more of one colour to make seam binding or non-quilted trim. Once everything's cut, should be easier to tell where to quilt the dragon.. Lol. Doable but totally insane and not for the faint of heart!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful when you discover they were paying attention? :-)
