five years and then some.

Five years is a long time by many measures. When I started writing at Badskirt in 2008, I had no idea that I was laying down the foundations of a five year detour. I wanted to show my friend my first apron. I wanted to talk about my wrap skirt. I had no idea then, that I'd be launching a toy business selling online and at local markets. I had no idea that I'd be importing brilliant Japanese craft fabrics and on-selling them to the rest of the world. I hadn't expected myself to become a full-time blogger, maker and marketer.

Just six years ago, I didn't own a sewing machine. Badskirt has been an unexpected detour for me. The girl who shunned home-ec never fancied herself as a dressmaker. I hadn't thought of myself as deft with a crochet hook or capable of quilting, yet I found myself writing tutorials, giving guidance and encouraging others.

In many ways those five years went quickly. As an artist, I was learning so much.  Not only was I picking up new techniques, but I was finding my voice both as a maker and a writer. I found joy in the everyday stories; and I loved sharing them with you, my readers. Were it not for you, I would have stopped writing long ago.

After five and a half years though, I find myself quieting.  My writing has faltered, and the time needed for the blog has given way to travel, making, coding and new adventures. 2.2 million page views. Hundreds of projects made with Badskirt. Thousands of quilt blocks egged along by tutorials that I've written. Frankly, I'm gobsmacked by what we've achieved in five years.

It hasn't been an easy decision, but I've decided to put Badskirt to bed for a while. I'm still going to be making things, of course. I just won't be writing as much. I won't be able to posting tutorials and tips, but please know that I'm still here quietly cheering you on.

Every so often, I'll have photos to share - projects that have been finished, trips that have been taken.  I hope Badskirt doesn't drop off your feed completely; maybe you can let it sit there quietly knowing that at any minute an old friend might drop in to say hello.

While it might tempting to the mourn the changes to Badskirt, I'd rather celebrate what's been achieved. If you're stuck for words, I'd love to see comments about your favorite projects and posts.  [Mine were tokens of love and the follow-on more tokens of love, if you're curious].  Let me know what tutorials have helped you.  Leave us all links that show projects you've made or things you've learned because of tiny tidbits here. We've come a long way together in five years.  I'm thankful to all of the Badskirt readers who have been along for the ride.

happy crafting

  2. Amy. You were one of the first blogs that I fell in love with hard and fast. I can't even remember how I found you, but I know it was three years ago when I started blogging.

When I first read "I've decided to put Badskirt to bed"...my heart dropped. But I am glad you aren't shutting down.

Even just a tiny glimpse here and there will sustain me.

  3. I can understand completely, but I will miss you! Glad you'll still pop in from time to time. The project I always associate with you is my X & + quilt, my favorite ever quilt I have ever made! Thank you for the instructions you put on Flickr.

I've made your paper pieced bee lately and I know lots of people enjoyed that; but overall enjoyed experiencing your original eye for things fabricy. All the best in your ongoing creative endeavours.

  8. I have read your blog for half of that time, on and off and always enjoy what you have to share, despite the fact that I have seldom commented here. I hope you will be having fun and growing and that you will stop by to share what you make sometimes. I will enjoy it when you do, Badskirt will stay in my reader.

  20. I'll be so happy whenever you pop up in my feed. I learned a lot here and laughed. The clover binding clips were a red hot tip I'm sure I picked up here. Thank you!

  21. I've never commented before, mostly because I never had time to set up a google account. But for you now, I've set one up! I first found Badskirt when I was trying to find a way to finish mt Grandmother garden quilt and loved your tutorial on how you did yours. I still haven't finished my quilt, but I've been reading Badskirt ever since. For that reason, my favourite is your hexy quilt, but I generally love your use of colour.

Good luck with your new adventures. You definitely deserve it after giving us so much over the years. I'll keep you on my feed and will look forward to you popping in here and there!

Many thanks for all the good reads and yummy pictures, Corinne x

  22. Amy, I have to say you have single-handedly inspired me to "get back in the quilt world" after a long hiatus. All because of a forwarded link to your hexie finishing tutorial. I'd never even read a blog before -had no idea what they were about, much less WHY. Down the rabbit hole I went. I judge all blogs by "badskirt" standards :-) Thank you SOOOOO much - you have changed how I look at the quilting world I used to know & love - so much for the better! Will always be thankful for whatever you share with the rest of us. You ROCK!! Be well & Take care!

  23. I just found this blog, and sewing in general. (I was excused from sewing in home ec for breaking a sewing machine and back then I was better with a welder anyway!) The quality of your writing is such that I wouldn't mind if this evolved into less of a sewing blog and more of a general blog about any adventures you have. I'd love to hear, for example, your observations about the places you visit.
Good luck in whatever you do.

Ps. I'm going to go back and read from the beginning. :-)

  25. I LOVE your Scrappy X and + Blocks tutorial and used it to make this quilt: http://coopcrafts.com/2012/12/01/the-tough-chickie-quilt-a-quilt-about-divorce/ I think I found your blog through that tutorial and I've been a fan ever since. (Although I apologize for being a quiet follower.) I love your colorful style and I'll be happy whenever you have something to share. Enjoy making stuff just for the bliss of it!

  26. What a great idea someone had--to go back and read from the beginning. I'm going to do that, as I've only been back into quilting for about 18 months now. As for what I've loved most in the time I've been reading? It's your travel posts where you showed those retro RVs; your block tutes, especially the sort of dwr border--I've got to try that one day; and your writing--I love your writing most. When you write about what's going on inside your heart, I feel like I actually know you. And that, my friend, is nice. Good luck on your "journey," and I hope to see you in my feed occasionally. You were my favorite writer. Thanks :`)

  27. I feel like I missed too much! I'm glad I've been reading you for a few years and have totally enjoyed that time. I think I "met" you for real when I read your review post of the go Baby cutters. I was standing on my chair cheering that someone was giving a real review about something they weren't crazy about. Sooooooo refreshing. I remember your post and your genuine persona whenever I fight the battle to speak the truth in this very rosy blog world. Thanks for that!

  28. My favourite post so far in terms of inspiration that actually turned into something was your Ikea hack drop-in sewing table. Thanks to that post I was able to explain and show what I wanted to my boyfriend who told his Dad who was around the next day with a jigsaw (any excuse to get the power tools out I think). A quick trip to Bunnings and a few hours later, I had a custom cutout and adjustable shelf for my Juki and I absolutely love it, so thank you!

  29. I think summer (or is winter for you?) is always the most difficult to sit down and share thoughts.
I just made your paper-pieced BEE and thought to show it off to you:
    http://runningwithrocket.blogspot.com/2013/08/busy-bees.html

I've had some things happen this summer that have brought the question of my 'forever sharing' back to the forefront. I still want a journal to record 'stuff' so I will continue (not being as 'famous' as you) to remember this is a great place to throw photos that would otherwise be homeless.

    Good luck and best wishes.

  30. Your blog and your flickr stream are my very favorite places for inspiration on the web, but I frequently drop off in reading blogs and surfing flickr streams, so I can't complain. I hope that taking a break from blogging will make space in your life for new and wonderful things. Wishing you well in your other adventures,
    Melinda

  31. Have loved reading and lurking since your cutter reviews, such honesty, it can be a rare thing. Love your XPlus block and others, your travel adventures too but most of all I love that you found a side of yourself you didn't know before... here's hoping that this new adventure provides you the same. Wishing you the best on your new path.

  32. Gahh, I just decided to visit your blog since I linked to your bee pattern yesterday. I didn't know you were going on hiatus! Of course, I realize that you are the best judge of when to give yourself a blogging break, but I fully expect/need to see your brilliant work and particular brand of humour on Flickr:) You've certainly influenced my sewing immensely. I can only imagine that you'll find some other innovative channel for your ideas and energy, and I'm sure you'll put everything into that...and I'll be there!
