deconstructed.

I've been deconstructing lately. I've got a few projects around the house that were "completed" but not really loved. They'd been relegated to the back shelf. Rather than neglect them, I'm going to find a way to make them shine as something new. There's a a small square of Type that I did a shabby job of free motion quilting, a quilt where I picked the wrong binding and there's this quilt which was pear shaped from the very beginning. I tried to talk myself into loving it, but it just didn't work.

I've made friends with my seam ripper and out it to use on all three project. I'm pulling away the bits that I don't like and waiting for the projects to spring back to life as something that I love.

I'm a bit stumped about these panels. I've got 20 string-as-you-go blocks that are well out of square. They're going to need a drastic hack and slash to become useful. I'm a bit stuck for ideas though. a better shaped quilt? notebook covers? handbags? quilted toys? what would you do?

  1. How about a weekend bag, super usefull and a wash bag to go inside?

  2. What about a block book with pages of wadding to store the blocks you are stitching and a notebook cover to capture ideas.

  3. I don't know what I would do, but that pile of deconstructed looks fabulous with all those colors.

  4. Square them up, regardless, cut into four, add a self colour sashing, sew them all together and have a new modern quilt!

  5. I have a pile of these I need to attend to too! I thnk remaking into another lovelier quilt is the most satisfying in the end, but wait until you're inspired with something!

  6. Either cut them up and sew them back together different, or use them to make storage baskets - they will be nice and stiff and need no interfacing.

  7. Not sure how big they are, but could they be made into coasters, place-mats, trivets or potholders? What about a table runner? A set of cushion covers? A throw for the couch?

  8. I agree with doing some sort of weekender or duffel. I took the patchwork skirt I made at Quiltcon (which took hours just to piece), deconstructed it (knowing I would look like a cow in it!), and made an awesome duffel from the patchwork panels. Now that skirt, I'll wear!

  9. I'd use them as a fabulous big border around a center medallion of something. then add more around them. I'd even hack them up and stitch them back together for said border to break up the "diamond-y" nature, possibly adding additional color, and into a size that fits the need. I love the colors in these strings and wish my stash had more aqua.

  10. Lots of good ideas already. If the not-straight/square nature of the strips is bugging you, you might not notice it much if you cut them into a totally not square/rectangular shape. You could make them into triangles or cut them as circles for applique.

  11. How about a giveaway. Pick someone from who left you a idea of what to do with them.
