the quirky shirt
My favorite t-shirt is a baby-blue, flared tank top with a large and looming skull screenprinted on it. You read that right - an enormous skull speckled like a Lichtenstein in hues of oxblood, charcoal and black. It has white ribbed armbands, shredded jersey accents and a sweet little bow right at the neckline. If you can imagine a Japanese pop princess going to a Sex Pistols concert, then you almost have a mental picture. It's a great shirt. ...if you can put aside the slight psychotic undertones.
Craig doesn't like.
Fine. I get that. I'll admit that when I come to the party I'm decked out as a harbinger of death. But the thing about it is this: it is the most comfortable shirt that I've ever owned. It isn't stylish. It doesn't show off my body. It does little to flatter me, quite the opposite actually. It is madly comfortable though, and for that it is a winner.
For Craig's sanity, I decided to see if I could make the same shirt in something a little more endearing to him. I swung so far in the opposite direction that I found myself using a kids' printed jersey cotton with waves and sailboats. It might be too quirky, even for me. I picked it up yesterday at Spotlight and stopped into Remnant Warehouse today to get a suitably odd, contrasting burgundy ribbing.
Not long ago, I wouldn't have had the confidence to sew up a knit, let alone reverse draft the pattern by myself. I think Meg Elwee's explanation of knit types in her Crafty class bolstered my confidence.
I reverse engineered the pattern from my favorite shirt which worked out fairly well. This was my first time working with actual ribbing fabric, so it took a few goes to work out how short to make the neckband. Like my skull shirt, I omitted top stitching around the neck and armbands. The finishes aren't perfect. Considering I made it on a domestic sewing machine, I think it's good enough. No one sees those finished except me anyway.
I love making quilts and small zakka projects, but there is something extremely satisfying about sewing clothes for yourself... however simple... however quirky.
I miss the Remnant Warehouse! I've sewn with this knit recently too (not enough stretch for me) as I made a couple of baby leggings!
ReplyDeleteYour ribbing looks so neat! Did you just use a straight stitch or an overlocker?
I'm glad you commented on the fabric. I've got some long awkward offcuts which seemed just right for baby leggings and was just searching for patterns to use it up. I'll look for looser pants instead.
DeleteI used my normal straight stitch machine, but I used the 'double overlock' stitch. I used my walking foot which was a tip that I picked up that is supposed to make things more even. I think I could have made the ribbing on the neck a wee bit tighter, but I'm happy for a first go
I haven't heard from you in a while! I hope you're doing well.
I'm dying to sew knits with confidence on my regular machine! So far I've used the old 'Stretch and Sew' technique (70s maybe?). But occasionally stitches break, which isn't heartbreaking since that happens even on knits I buy. But perhaps I'll check out the Craftsy class and learn a few more tips :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great Amy. I use the super stretch stitch on my Bernina, stitch 9, along with my walking foot and its given me a lot of confidence working with knits.
ReplyDeleteThis top looks great - I love the use of a really quirky print along with a fairly simple shape. I sewed clothes as a teenager but have since given it up - I was never all that successful and it was too frustrating putting in all that time and effort only to end up with something less than satisfactory. I'm starting to get tempted to try garment sewing again after realising that most clothes don't fit me properly - I really need an extra few inches in length in most clothes my size. Please keep going with your attempts - it definitely encourages me to have a go.
ReplyDeleteI'm too chicken to sew knits but I just wanted to say I love this top, the fabric, the style everything
ReplyDeletenow i'm dying to know if Craig likes this shirt :)
